Best Hikes in Oahu: 15 Ultimate, Stunning Trails

Discover the best hikes in Oahu, from scenic trails to epic views, with this guide to the island’s most unforgettable hikes.

The kind of local, kind-of clueless guide who has probably been lost on half of these. If you’re searching for the 15 Stunning Attractions in Harpers Ferry You’ll Love, I will never forget the first time I tried exploring Harpers Ferry. I arrived at 9:00 AM and had already worked up a sweat before I even got properly started, and my sneakers were clearly out of their depth—that had absolutely no business dealing with what I was about to force them to endure.

After twenty minutes of legs feeling like they were about to catch fire and lungs giving themselves over to a full-scale rebellion, I plopped down and thought, “Is this an elaborate joke on Instagram?”
Spoiler: it’s not easy. But the reward is outstanding. And this is pretty much the theme of exploring Harpers Ferry: spectacular rewards, a small degree of agony to get to them and usually a good story to remember. So, you’re going to Harpers Ferry, and you’ve Googled 15 Stunning Attractions in Harpers Ferry You’ll Love at 11pm on a work night while your significant other is fast asleep and you’re stuck in an hour-long trip planning cycle (no judgement, I’ve been there).

Well, this one is for you. I’m here to tell you which attractions are actually worth their fame, which ones might be a little out of the way but are totally doable, and which ones the locals still really love even with all the hustle. I’m also going to tell you the real stuff nobody tells you about these attractions until you’re sitting there at 6am with 200 other cars trying to figure out where on the face of this Earth your car is supposed to go. So let’s just dive in and get you sorted with the 15 Stunning Attractions in Harpers Ferry You’ll Love.

Quick Picks: The Best Oahu Hikes at a Glance

Before we get ahead of ourselves, here are the cliffhangers. If there’s one section that you should save, it’s this one. This guide to the best hikes on Oahu is great for any fitness level and schedule. Below is a quick-reference table of the best hikes in Oahu, organized by difficulty and distance.

HikeDifficultyDistanceIs a permit required?Best For
Diamond HeadEasy-ModerateYou’re looking at about 1.6 miles total, there and back.Yes, it’s better to book in advance.First-time sunrise
Koko Head StairsHardDistance: 1.8 miles, round tripNoOpinions, bragging rights
Manoa FallsEasy1.6 miles round trip.NoFamily, waterfalls
Lanikai PillboxModerate1.5 miles RTNoSunrise on the Beach
Makapuʻu Point Lighthouse TourEasy2.5 miles round tripNoWhale Watching (winter)
Kuliouou RidgeModerate-Hard5 km RTNoCrowds-avoiders
Waimano TrailModerate7 miles RTNoRainforest solitude

So now, I want to discuss these in turn properly, because tables do not say everything.

Diamond Head: The One Everyone Does

Diamond Head is the hike on literally every list of things to do on Oahu, and I actually rolled my eyes at it before I did it. Overrated tourist trap was what I said with what I felt was the superior perspective from my experience of never having actually hiked it. Oh. That was wrong. Sorry, former me. The trail follows the inner circumference of a dormant volcanic crater. Honestly, just typing that is weird, let alone traversing it before stopping in a World War II bunker. From there, you can see Waikiki and all along the coastline (with an uninhibited 360-degree view). The trek to it feels like some kind of incredible deception.

It starts with a concrete switchback and ends with you breathing at 563 feet. You wonder how in the hell you ended up so fortunate to exist in that moment on that little piece of rock in the vast blue Pacific. Here’s where it gets tricky: you now need a reservation to hike Diamond Head even if you are a Hawaii resident! You need reservations and should make them online prior to arriving at the official DLNR Diamond Head State Monument website. They book up, and so definitely get one before going, especially for the earlier times of day, which you really want. Get here earlier.

Not because of trendiness, but because after 10:00 am the crater will be a convection oven and the trail will turn into a single-file conga line of tourists (myself included, unfortunately) walking single file up tiny stone steps.
Quick facts:

  • Distance: 1.6 miles return.
  • Stairs: You climb a few stairs and pass through one short tunnel. Technicality is zero.
  • Reservation: Required to book online in advance.
  • Parking: Limited and requires reservations; arrive early or consider using a rideshare service.

Koko Head: Oahu’s Stairmaster From Hell

Right, on to Koko Head, as I promised a story, and now I’m delivering on that promise. It’s actually not a hike at all – 1,048 old railway ties ascend a near-vertical 45-degree slope, a holdover from WWII military tramway. Calling it stairs is a bit like calling a marathon ‘a stroll’, which it actually is, but not in a way which tells the truth. Brutal is; there’s no shade, no switchbacks for a gradual ascent and definitely no easy way up. You just go straight up.

I stopped counting my steps at about 300 in and, instead, counted how many strangers were gasping close by for solace. (Lots, that is an honest shared human experience up there.)
However, and that is a large “however”, the view at the top is spectacular. Hanauma Bay curves around in a sickle shape. The water transitions from a pale turquoise, moving towards Koko Marina, then all the way to Diamond Head on a clear day. It’s exactly the view you need to forget that your calves are formally registering an objection at the moment. (Look up the conditions on AllTrails before you set out; the tram tracks move around).
Quick facts:

  • Distance: 1.8 miles return trip
  • Hard – steep, uneven and exposed to the sun
  • Permit: None needed

The biggest piece of advice I could give you: take more water than you think you will. No, really, take double.

Manoa Falls: The Jurassic Park One

So if Koko Head is the punishment, Manoa Falls is the reward. This is an easy, fairly flat walk through the rainforest with trees so dense and green they look as though they’ve come straight from a film set – in fact, some of the film and TV worlds of Jurassic Park and Lost filmed right here, and once you’re under the trees with the roots snaking over the mud like veins, it makes sense. The trail to the 150-foot waterfall, which, depending on recent rain volume, goes from “dramatic and roaring to just a trickle, but still pretty”.

Nevertheless, it’s a worthwhile, low-effort payoff. It’s an excellent choice for families with young children, older relatives, or anyone who had concerns about the Koko Head description, even if they didn’t say so.es. Be aware, the trail does get muddy – we’re talking comically, unarguably muddy, particularly after it rains (which is always, in a rainforest) – so wear shoes that don’t matter to you. Lesson learned by this particular hiker after she went through her favourite white sneakers, which will now eternally be dirty white. AllTrails provides maps, details and up-to-date reports about conditions.
Quick facts:

  • Distance: 1.6 miles round trip
  • Difficulty: Easy
  • Permit: None needed
  • Best time: Morning, before the afternoon rains start.

Lanikai Pillbox Trail: Sunrise, But Make It Iconic

Certain hikes you do for exercise, others purely for the view, and Lanikai Pillbox is one of the latter, the view of the Mokulua Islands, two little green full stops sitting offshore in the endless blue sea of sentence. A trail leads you up the ridge above Lanikai Beach to a pair of old WWII pillboxes (concrete bunkers that graffitists have unfortunately tagged and Insta-bloggers have covered). A quick, steepish climb (StairMaster’s kinder sibling), and you arrive at a lookout where the decision to wake up at 4.45 a.m. on vacation suddenly feels justified. Ka’iwa Ridge Trail on AllTrails.

I’ll confess that sunrise hikes never sound as exciting when your 5am alarm goes off and you have to peel yourself out of a warm bed, supposedly vacationing, in Hawaii. However, nothing about seeing the sky turn from navy to pink to gold over the ocean, all while sipping some coffee (BYO, there’s no cafe that’s open), can set your whole vacation back on track. It’s one of those moments that people will tell friends back home about much more detailedly than needed.
Quick facts:

  • Distance: 1.5 miles return trip
  • Challenging – steep in very short sections
  • Permit: Not needed, but technically crosses private land at some points, so remain on the trail.
  • Most suitable time: obviously at sunrise.

Makapuʻu Point Lighthouse Trail: The Easy Win

It doesn’t always have to be painful to go on a hike. Makapuu Point is a broad paved trail along sea cliffs at the very eastern end of Oahu. The trail culminates in a lighthouse lookout point with great views of the coast. It’s the hiking equivalent of a “greatest hits” album, comfortable, familiar and with no unpleasant surprises. The

DLNR Division of State Parks provides updated trail information, including opening hours
It’s also one of the better spots to view whales off the island during approximately December to April. One day in January I found myself here with my over-optimistically carried binoculars and saw a humpback breaching out at sea; it was one of those “did that just happen?” moments.
Quick facts:

  • Distance: 2.5 miles return
  • Easy tarmac, slight slope
  • Permit: None needed
  • Suitable for: Family, Whale Season, Sunrise or Sunset.

Kuliouou Ridge, Waimano Trail: For When You Want the People to Clear Off

I have been hiking in Oahu for years, and there is nothing about the best-known Oahu hikes that isn’t famous. The only problem with the popular trails is the fact they are mobbed. If you have already seen the main three Oahu hikes and would like some quiet, then look no further; this is where locals escape:
Kuliouou leads you into a valley, then a thick stand of Norfolk pines, and then exits on to an exposed and narrow ridge with views across the entire south-east coast. It runs longer and steeper than most of the above trails, and rather than hundreds of people, you may see a few other hikers joining you.

AllTrails has the full route if you want to look at the elevation gain. Waimano Trail, on the other hand, meanders far back into a vibrant valley, past an old bridge, streams, and lush jungle growth. Instead of “a checkbox being ticked”, this hike gives you an immersive experience. It’s a longer, muddier, and much more involved endeavour, but it feels much more authentic to an Oahu that’s not trying to be everything to everyone; these trails both illustrate that Oahu’s top hikes don’t necessarily involve the longest lines for a ‘Gramme. For current Waimano conditions, check AllTrails, and cross-reference each park with the state’s official Oahu trail listings, as sometimes access points vary.
Quick facts (Kuliouou Ridge):

  • Distance: 5 miles (out and back)
  • How difficult: Medium-difficult
  • Permit: None needed

Quick facts (Waimano Trail):

  • Distance: 7 miles round trip
  • Difficulty: Moderate
  • Permit: You don’t need a permit.

Helpful Tips Most People Don’t Mention

A few things I wish I had known before going on my first hike in Oahu, and before I set out to find the best hikes in Oahu on my own:

  • To be honest, finding a parking spot can sometimes be more challenging than the hike itself.
  • I’m not kidding; it’s not the uphill climbs, it’s the parking. Diamond Head and Koko Head get packed quickly, so either get there early or get an Uber/Lyft.
  • There is no “weather or shine” here; it’s weather or shine or weather again in a single hour. Bring a light raincoat, even if the day is bright. The weather of Oahu is a player.
  • Shoes are surprisingly important. For the vast majority of these trails, hiking boots aren’t required, but flip-flops (or “slippers” as they’re known locally) are an undeniably terrible choice if the path is muddy or of loose volcanic rock.
  • Flash floods on rainforest hikes like those on Manoa Falls or Waimano can also become a potential danger after a good rain. If you come to a stream crossing that seems too high or swift, back up.
  • The cell signal drops off quickly when you’re in a valley or up on a ridge. Make sure you download your offline maps, and if you’re travelling alone, let someone know your whereabouts.

To learn more about trail safety in general and good trail manners, the Go Hawaii safety tips from the Hawaii Tourism Authority are quick and easy to skim before heading out.

Final Thoughts (From Someone Who’s Now Slightly Obsessed)

I came to Oahu for the beaches, and I left thinking about the trails more than the sand. Something about hiking on Oahu is unlike anywhere else I’ve ever hiked. Maybe it’s that one trail can lead you from a thick rainforest to a parched ridge to a sheer cliff overhanging the sea in a matter of two or three miles. Or maybe it’s the sheer volcanic theatricality of the whole island, a constant scene to steal at every opportunity. No matter what it is, if there’s one activity you MUST do on your trip other than lounging on the sand (and you absolutely should lounge, no judgement), do a hike.

Try Diamond Head the first time you go, reserve Koko Head until you’re truly brave, and explore Kuliouou or Waimano if you have more days for a version of the island that is truly your own. And wear a better pair of shoes than I did. Take an example from my error. Whatever shape you’re going for in your itinerary, the best hikes in Oahu listed below provide a great basis for developing your own.
