The Best Mallorca Beaches, Ranked by a Local

Explore the best Mallorca beaches, from hidden coves and secluded bays to lively spots, with tips on when to go and get there now.

I can still see myself on the beach at Playa de Palma, on my first morning in Mallorca, thick bits of sunblock stinging my eyes and wondering… “Is that it then? Is this the island everyone has been telling me to come to?”

Loud bars. Sunbeds everywhere. A beach club blaring a German techno remix at 10am. I’ve devoured three “Top Mallorca Beaches” lists before I’d left, thrown a bag together, and arrived right in the middle of the high-octane party capital of the Balearics by mistake. Who knew every Mallorca beach isn’t the same, and no one had ever mentioned that this island has more moods than a teenager during her finals.

It actually took me nearly two weeks and a rental car with a slightly embarrassing grinding sound before I really understood what was so amazing about Mallorca’s coastline. So consider this your cheat sheet. I’m going to run you through the beaches that gained residence in my brain for the long-term, based on what it is you’re searching for, because beaches labeled “best beach” mean a completely different thing if you’re traveling with kids than if you’re trying to nurse a massive hangover beneath the Spanish sunshine.

Buy a coffee (or a glass of the local Mallorquin wine, who are we to judge) and here we go:

Before we jump into the detailed articles, here is a quick overview of a few leading Mallorca beaches, perfect for anyone looking to discover Beautiful Islands on the Mediterranean to Explore.

Quick Comparison: Mallorca’s Best Beaches at a Glance

BeachRegionBest ForCrowd Level
Es TrencSouthThe couples, “Caribbean” sensations,Moderate-High
Cala MondragoSoutheastMariculture of a family in the snorkel / Families, Snorkelpç.Moderate
Calo des MoroSoutheastPhotos, in deserted covesHigh (extremely positive)
Cala AgullaNortheastFamilies, breathing space.Low-Moderate
Playa de MuroNorthThe Clifden families, essentially long lies. It is perhaps the long sandy reaches of Clifden that the past community found a home for itself. The sands, the long beaches, may have been a paradise or a hell, but certainly the sands are a perfect place for families to settle.Moderate
Cala VarquesEastWild swimming. No facilities.1. Low (Hike necessary) 8. This indicates a very tight distribution of points within this section of the graph and rarely, if ever, shows a high point.
Playa de PalmaSouth (near capital)Nightlife, partiesVery High
Es Calo des Moro neighbor, Cala S’AlmuniaSoutheastTranquil, rural appealLow-Moderate

Clutch this table. We will explain each of these below- one including how to get to it, as a lot of Mallorca is all about logistics not aesthetics.

For That “Wait, Is This the Caribbean?” Moment: Es Trenc

If you’ve been scrolling through Instagram of Mallorca even for a second, you have already seen Es Trenc. The waters here do this unbelievable thing where they gradually change from a pale turquoise to a deep sapphire blue in bands, except they almost look Photoshopped onto the sea directly, like a gradient filter. It is completely mind-blowing when you first see it.

Here’s a secret no-one talks about: Es Trenc is enormous. Like, almost two miles of protected beach are enormous. So it can be heaving (which it is in July) and you can still walk ten minutes in either direction and find yourself all alone on a three-mile stretch of sand. I did that on a Tuesday afternoon, wandered past the surfers and the champagne set near the entrance and settled for a ridiculously overpriced but very delicious sandwich from a beach hut while a family of ducks…’enjoyed’ the sea. Yes – ducks. Welcome to a nature reserve.

Practical notes:

  • In the vicinity of the town of Ses Salines, 45 min. From Palma.
  • Free to access, though you have to pay a few euros for the car parking.
  • Infra-structures consist of beach cafes (chiringuitos), sunbeds rental, toilets near the main entrance.
  • The lakes – shallow, tranquil water was really good for families, even if it did perpetuate the “romantic getaway” reputation.

The One That’ll Wreck Your Camera Roll: Calo des Moro

I want to be honest: Calo des Moro is not easy to reach and I don’t mean that I found it a little challenging, I mean it’s unfriendly. It is a narrow, limestone bay nestled between cliffs and the “path” down is really a highly managed slide across jagged rocks. The statement “My sandals did not survive the journey” doesn’t do this experience justice. Nor, if I’m honest, did my pride as I half-crab-walked the last twenty yards.

But then you reach the bottom, and the water is so clear you can see individual grains of sand ten feet down. It pushes your mind off the pain of your scraped knee for a little while.

This is the beach that appears in all of the “most beautiful beaches in Europe” lists, and frankly, it deserves it. The issue is that the word has very much gotten around getting here after 9 am in high season and you’ll be parking fifteen minutes up the beach, if you can find a parking spot.

My tip is as early as possible: 7:30 am. I realize you, on vacation, no one wants to listen to an alarm clock in the morning. But seeing the cove light up before the hordes arrive makes one vacation no-morning exception worth it.

  • Situated on the southeast side close to Sanantanyi
  • No facilities. Bring drinks, snacks and sun protection!
  • Steep, unlevel accessway into the site – not stroller or wheelchair accessible
  • The adjacent cove Cala S’Almunia is more serene and well worth combining with a visit.

Where I’d Actually Take Kids: Cala Mondrago

Millis was so surprisingly nice that I couldn’t not put it on the list. On the less idyllic end of the spectrum, we have literally two coves (within a protected wilderness park, no less) that are arguably the best “does exactly what it promises” beaches on this entire listing. Also incredibly safe, clean, shallow, wind-protected, with plenty of picnic tables shaded by pine trees to make you think you’re in on some little local secret (except it turns out everyone else is in on it too).

Honestly, it wasn’t the beach itself that convinced me on Mondrago it was the small group of hilly nature preserves surrounding it. I spent an entire afternoon on the coastal path that connected the two coves, marvelling at the sight of family after family losing the plot in their ‘spectacular sandcastle exploration’, and snorkeling in water so calm it practically grazed the surface.

Imagine that Mondrago is a beach golden retriever. He’s friendly, he’s bright and you wouldn’t expect him to bite.

  • Part of Mondrago Natural Park, southeast coast
  • Two coves: S’Amarador (larger, more exposed) and Ses Fonts de N’ Alis (smaller, more protected)
  • Toilets, got a lifeguard in season, walked a few steps to one or two carparks.
  • V. Excellent snapping off rocky shores

For Families Who Want Elbow Room: Cala Agulla

Cala Agulla, just around the corner from the town of Cala Rajada, is surely what I’d suggest to anyone co-traveling with young children who really do require room to zip about without flailing a bottomless glass of sangria. It’s broad, it’s lengthy and there’s pine woodland behind it, offering true shade and how often does that appear on the Balearic coast!

During my travels here, I met a British family who had returned to this same beach for thirteen years. Thirteen years! When I asked them why, the dad could only reply, The kids know where everything is. Why have a new one? I see the point. The beach is just simple, reliable, and keeps people coming.

  • Northeast coast, near Cala Rajada and Cala Ratjada
  • Wide, gently sloping sand [=infant friendly]
  • Shade under the pine forest west of the beach
  • Watersports rentals (Kays/ Boardstides) available in high season

The Long, Lovely Stretch: Playa de Muro

While Es Trenc may be the star of the show, and Calo des Moro the model posing for Instagram, Playa de Muro is the trusty friend that saves the day by arriving on time and not creating any fuss. It is situated along a near six-mile stretch of coastline in the Bay of Alcudia, and the sand is fine and pale and soft, not burning your feet in the midday sun.

I rented a bike in the town down the road and sped along the (separate) beach promenade for a full hour, stopping when I found it the right level of deserted/no-one. This is the great appeal of Playa de Muro: it’s long enough that ‘crowded’ and ‘deserted’ are only a fifteen-minute walk apart.

  • Northern coast, Bay of Alcudia, near S’Albufera Natural Park
  • Medium white sand shallow at entry great for young children
  • The boardwalks and bike paths run in a parallel line along the beach
  • Close to a wetland nature reserve which is where birders will want to be.

The Wild Card: Cala Varques

Now for an honest assessment of Cala Varques: you need to put in some effort here, so if “effort” isn’t a phrase you’re familiar with while on holiday then don’t bother with this beach. No official car park; just a dirt track where you leave your car then walk twenty minutes through bush land to arrive at this beach.

And when you actually arrive, it becomes more like finding something. No chiringuitos, no stalls for renting sunbeds, no flock of humanity led to the promised land by a convoy of tour buses just faces of cliffs, pines stretching bent over balmy depths, and islanders ingeniously installing a rope-swing (which has become an institution) several years ago. Watching seemingly every Mallorcan kid on the island take his turn pirouetting off of it, squealing every second, I couldn’t help myself, thank God; is it just the Mallorcan in me, or did I, at twenty-nine years old, hold my dignity entirely intact until that moment?

  • East coast, near Porto Cristo and Cala Manacor
  • Bought everything you need: water, food, shade, first aid
  • Not accessible via public transportation car needed, plus a walk
  • No lifeguards swim at your own risk. Caution: more when there are waves.

And the Honest Truth About Playa de Palma

I’m not about to suggest Playa de Palma doesn’t have a role to play, because it does – perhaps just not the role that I originally set out for it to hold. If it’s beach clubs, late-night swing, and forty-five around-the-clock kilometres of promenade lined with bars that you’re after then this has it all covered. To be fair it’s more ‘wash, rinse and South American festival weekend’ than it is ‘slow, serene and sound of the Mediterranean’ and on a day like today I can’t say I mind.

Just don’t walk onto Es Trenc expecting it to be peaceful. Find a beach that fits how you really feel and not one that fits how you should feel.

  • South-westward coast in the vicinity of Palma city and the airport
  • We also offer a wide array of nightlife, restaurants and beach clubs.
  • Very convenient by public transportation.
  • All the year around, but the busy time is during the peak of summer.

Getting Around: What I Wish I’d Known Sooner

A car rental in Mallorca makes all the difference. Certainly, public transport is in place, and the buses are fine for the larger, easier-to-access beaches such as Playa de Muro or Playa de Palma, but the inlets such as Calo des Moro, Cala Varques or the more secluded south east corners are pretty much inaccessible without a car. After three days of public transport, I missed half of the coastline I hoped to visit but hadn’t the wheels to do so. Thanks to the rental company, a little lighter in the pocket but definitively everything you need.

Getting about efficiently is a huge part of the game when hunting downthehiddenaway beaches of Mallorca.

A few logistics that’ll save you a headache:

  • Cost to rent a car if you want to chase more than 2-3 beaches- the bus will be woefully inadequate for the coves
  • Wake up as early as possible (by 9am) when visiting highly recommended coves in July and August parking is crowded and sand is too!
  • Take water shoes with you (located in rocky coves calo des moro as the entry points are not always sandy).
  • May, June and September are for warm water, and significantly fewer crowds than peak July-August

Further Reading: Official Resources Worth Bookmarking

A lot of my first trip was guesswork because I used a bunch of random blog posts, which weren’t actually tracking this information. Don’t make the same mistake I did here are the authoritative, high-quality resources I wish I had known about earlier:

  • Beaches in Mallorca:Internet directory of beaches (mallorca.com) has all the ~250 beaches sorted by coast, then type of sand, size, and facilities
  • Mondragó Natural Park : General information of the protected park of cala Mondrago and Samarador.

Are worth reviewing before you make the trip, as their operating hours, routes and services can change from season to season, something you can’t be sure of in a blog, such as this one.

So, which beach should you realistically choose?

If I distilled two weeks of sunburn, wrong turns, and truly beautiful water into a single bit of guidance, here it is: don’t rush to do it all. Mallorca is a place for lingering. Choose two or three beaches that reflect your pace whether it’s drifting in Es Trenc’s pastel-blue shallows, crawling out to Calo des Moro at dawn, or letting your children craft ever-more-elaborate sandcastles at Cala Mondrago and stay there long enough to savor them.

Anyway, the grinding rental car noise. Yep, just a loose heat shield. No big deal. Just like my first impression of the beaches in Mallorca, initially a bit terrifying, but totally fine once I knew what I was doing.

Ultimately, these are the best beaches Mallorca offers based on the vacation you are actually on and not the one you dream about getting in someone else’s vacation shots.

And now, pack your sunscreen. And perhaps we should leave the water-shoe conversation behind – just grab them.
