Hiking Planet: The Best Planet Walks to Explore

Explore hiking planet trails around the world, walk the solar system, discover amazing routes, and plan your next cosmic hike.

A few years ago, while having dinner, my nephew asked me a straightforward question:

“How far away are the planets from Neptune?”

I threw out an answer like you have to a person when you‘re so full you can‘t collect your thoughts.,

“Truly, truly far,” I said, scoop-ing mashed potatoes onto my plate.

He stared at me.

Everyone has experienced the one that says ‘That was not an answer, and you know it’.

He was correct.

I knew that it was billions of kilometres from Neptune, but “billions” meant nothing on a human scale. It was just a number. The number we turn to when we no longer have any other way of imagining something.

A few weeks later I found something that changed my perception of walking and space forever: the planet walk, also called a planet trail or solar system walk.

It‘s incredibly simple. In other words, imagine taking the solar system, reducing the scales so that the planets are all the length of a marathon, and then walking yourself from the Sun to the planets beyond.

I was sold before I ever got my boots on.

So, this is the sojourning planet walk I wish I would have found the first time I tried to plan one: what exactly a planet walk is, where you can find one, how to go about planning your visit, and how to build one if there is no walk located close by.

If you are seeking an adventure in the far South, then this same feeling of discovering the unknown naturally ties in with Ushuaia Argentina: The Ultimate End of the World Guide.

What is a planet walk?

A planet walk (or ‘planet trail’) is the use of the planet’s physical model to promote further understanding and activities involving the planets.

For example, suppose we have a hiking path, and at the beginning of the trail we set a mark for the: .

Now, as you walk through this, to your right you will see markers for Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune.

However, notice that the planets aren‘t just arranged in (what else!) a line, but rather they have been arranged using a, and I quote by a scale model of their actual distances from the Sun;

As a result, that turns this into a different thing.

Most of us have seen a diagram in a science book that has the planets lined up in order, almost like children standing ready to take a class picture.

Those graphs are helpful, but they are nowhere near proportionate to the huge nothingness of the solar system.

In contrast, that emptiness can be felt in the planet walk, you can put your legs through it.

For instance, if the scale is about 1:1 billion, the Sun would have a diameter of about 1.4m, the scale width of the earth would be about 1.5cm and at a distance of about 150m from the Sun. Then Neptune should be about 4.5km away from the Sun.

All of a sudden, “really, really far” begins to have significance.

Similarly, NASA, adopts a similar scale-model activity in order to help students understand the vast distances within our solar system.

For instance, NASA‘s Voyage Scale Model Solar System has a scale of 1:10,000,000,000.

Once you‘ve traveled around a planet trail, the distances between planets cease to be mere numbers.

In the above paragraph, I just feel them.

Why Planet Hikes Are Different From Regular Hikes

I love a good summit push as much as the next hiker. However, a planet walk offers something a scenic viewpoint can‘t quite give.

They tell a story

In trying to explain the variance among subjects (individual differences) and conditions (different administration times), the theorists seek to account for the differences each participant shows, and the results that dramatically change from subject to subject.

Instead, you‘re not just walking to the viewpoint, the walking has a story.

Start out in the sun. One passes by Mercury and Venus, arrives at Earth, then continues on toward Mars and then finally penetrates the huge fields of space between the planets and inner planets.

Therefore, it‘s part hike, part treasure hunt, and part astronomy lesson.

The treasure is perspective.

they work well in a mixed group

Not everyone in a hiking group shares the exact same desire.

For example, one person may be there for their fitness. Someone else may have a passion for space. Another person simply might love the outdoors.

As a result, a planet trail simplifies the visible attributes.

They‘re appealing to young people and child-friendly without being childish, immature, or ridiculous.

I have my nephew, the source of my obsession, to thank for turning me from bored to bossy in roughly ten minutes.

Then, he became the official planet spotter and kept me reading every placard I was about to walk past.

That‘s what I love best about the planet walk: it is educational without sounding like a lesson.

Illustration of the unseen in the artwork.

Îly as in Tchab had been manipulated with light and together we constructed a display for the audience. I‘m making the processes behind the work visible.

In addition, you do not need a telescope.

It‘s not necessary to have a degree in astronomy.

All you need, therefore, is a pair of footwear and bollocks to carry on walking.

The Best Hiking Planet Trails Around the World

A few planet walks you might want to investigate: note that conditions along the trail, and opening hours and access arrangements, are subject to change: check before you set out.

1. Planet Trail in Gummer, South Tyrol, Italy

Maybe this is the trail I will teleport onto tonight.

Gummer’s orbit trail uses the scale of around 1:1 billion, with stations based upon the planets along its path. At this scale, 1m on this scale along the trail is equivalent to around a million km in the real solar system.

Let that sink in for a second.

Each metre equals a million kilometres.

In total, the whole section is about 9.2 kilometres long, with an elevation of approximately 262 meters of elevation gained and lost. It is marked as an “easy” family-friendly hike.

Starting at the Max Valier Observatory, Mercury becomes visible very soon after.

Next, proceed on the trek via Venus and Earth to the location of Earth situated near the Untereggerhof farm.

There is also an audio component to the trail available via temi.TRAVEL allowing you to listen to the planets as you walk.

However, as there are not many places for purchasing food or beverages along the way, prepare your food and drinks.

On the way we may also make a stop at the Unteregger inn, where you have a chance to taste South Tyrolean cuisine.

In other words: A brief tour through our solar system, and then a budget lunch.

This is the kind of hiking I support.

2. PlanetWalk at Sugarloaf Ridge, California, USA

Another challenging walk is the Sugarloaf Ridge PlanetWalk.

The trail is found within Sugarloaf Ridge State Park right in Northern California and employs an outside scale design of a solar system grown with the Robert Ferguson Observatory.

To begin, starting at the Sun found near the observatory, follow the track in the direction of the outer solar-system markers.

Whereas this gummer trail requires a significantly more compressed scale. Nevertheless, all the vast distance of the solar system can be scaled down to one fairly modest walk of a few miles, though that depends on which route you take.

Shorter out-and-backs are more manageable and longer out-and-backs are longer up to the Pluto marker.

Therefore, the trails are hilly and could be challenging, so this is more than just an educational walk.

Bring a lot of water, some snacks and the right shoes.

Relatedly, the observatory. The Robert Ferguson Observatory provides astronomy programs and public observing events through which you can view night and day skies.

Finally, pre-arrive and stay updated on current conditions, available information and event schedules before you come, especially as trail and park technologies can change.

3. SIRIUS Planet Trail, Switzerland

Switzerland when it comes to hiking has an unfair advantage over most other countries: stunning mountains.

In addition, the SIRIUS Planet Trail takes you to the stars.

On the way you are travelling through a model of the solar system with information on the planets while enjoying the views across the Alpine landscape.

There are also information boards throughout the route explaining planets and the information available in audio format.

Therefore, if you’re looking for more than just an educational walk, this trail pairs the astronomical experience with traditional Swiss hiking views.

The hike is about two hours long and may easily be combined with other tours in the Swiss.

Overall, if you’re astronomy with mountains this one is worth rounding out the list.

4. Planet Walk at Prairie Ridge, North Carolina, USA

Not all planet walk outings have to be for half a day.

For example, visit the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences, Prairie Ridge Ecostation, where you will see a full-scaled map of the solar system.

The Planet Walk is available as a self-guided experience or with programming.

Then, guests proceed from planet to planet and are stopped at stations along the way.

Closed toe shoes are advisable on any of the irregular and uneven ground, including mulch, dirt, and grassy terrain.

In particular, this experience is especially advantageous to families, and several of the templates are open for children five and older.

Because events and openings are subject to change. Consult the current schedule of the museum before making a special trip.

Bonus: “Hike the Planet” Global Scout Challenge

This isn‘t a trail purely physically though it is however it is so magnificent that it must be documented.

In addition, Hike the Planet The Hike the Planet challenge makes walking a big Earth walk In JOTA-JOTI 2024, thousands of Scouts worldwide hiked together to reach the moon and the moon is just the beginning.

It’s simple: the steps add up to much more.

That‘s also the wonderful thing about planet walks.

It doesn‘t take baby steps.

A million kilometres as viewed by the metaphor of a step with an upper limit?

However, here‘s a different matter entirely.

How to Plan Your Own Hiking Planet Adventure

I‘ve had to learn much of this the hard way, so here‘s my take on how I would approach a planet walk.

Choose a trail suitable for your group.

First, know your hikers.

Three hours on an uneventful, I suppose, and three hours walking up a mountain are worlds apart.

If you’re walking with youngsters, seek a local shorter route or one with guided activities and plenty of stops.

Verify the scale prior to beginning

The fun is in the middle, and the downsides at the ends of the scales.

For example, if the trail has a 1:1 billion ratio, you can easily determine what you are experiencing.

At that scale:

1 metre = about 1 million Km.

In other words, why, when you’re walking five kilometres from Neptune, you’re not simply walking further away from us. You’re walking through a model of the vast emptiness of our solar system.

Get all content in advance

Audio guides, maps and trail descriptions…

In addition, Mobile coverage seems to be a host friend to our hiking plans!

Therefore, download everything you will require before leaving the house, ideally over Wi-Fi.

Pack properly

packs adequately are meant at the outset to emphasize the importance of these simple actions.

Yes, simple!

In every operation, it is a mistake to ignore the preparatory work.

For instance, to pack properly is to save later on.

My standard planet-walk packing list includes:

  • Drinking enough water
  • Snacks
  • A good lunch for longer distances
  • Robust closed shoes
  • Extra layers (for the boat, body, or life jacket)
  • Protection des coupoles
  • A battery charged phone
  • A portable / power bank portable charger with various connector options, make it easily capable of charging a cell phone anywhere.
  • A notebook to jot down fascinating facts about planets

Q: Can I leave the notebook out? A: Yes.

But to that I am committed.

Set in motion as early as possible.

Though the administrative wheels are to turn slowly; once launched; initiatives take pace of their own.

As a result, the momentum generated by the first responses will embolden future projects.

For example, it’s typically cooler, less crowded, and more leisurely in the early hours of the day.

Also, it gives you some extra time if the ascension takes a bit longer than you thought it would.

Hiking a Planet Trail With Kids

I‘ll be honest: I didn‘t exactly set the world on fire when I first took a kid on a planet walk.

Didn’t Offer Enough Snacks.

It seemed impossible to travel to Neptune.

And a nine-year-old’s enthusiasm has a pretty short half-life.

However, I do it differently now.

Provide them with a job

Designate the child as the official planet-spotter, photographer, distance counter or navigator.

Even so, even a little duty can transform aimless strolls into trips.

Simple props

  1. Use simple props Jam are the most common props to use in a play. Day: using a clock for time concentration, offering time for a character, or checking devices to check time. 7, Serve with simple props 7. Use simple props Jam are the most common props to use in a play. Day: using a clock for time concentration, offering time for a character, or checking devices to check time.

However, you don‘t require what you think of as special equipment.

With just a marble, a peppercorn, a grapefruit, you can illustrate the relative sizes of the planets.

The aim, therefore, is not for scientific accuracy.

It‘s about perspective.

Learning how small Earth is in comparison with the Sun came easily to children.

Looking for the fun

We will play in the distance.

For example, ask:

“How many steps do you think it will take us to get to the next planet?”

Then amount.

It‘s extremely competitive.

2. Plan reward

Finding an incentive that motivates the learner is essential.

This is crucial because it will motivate the learner continuously and encourage him to discover new things.

Possible incentives include:

  • A third party reward.
  • A stop for ice-cream, a picnic or a restaurant can be a welcome treat to everyone.

On the Gummer trail, for example, dining at a pub could be a part of the story, too.

Know when to turn around

Who understands more about their own needs, own resources; own time, own resources; own reliance on one’s own needs?

In other words, this may be considered as quiet how to be when to hold oneself back.

This is perhaps the biggest secret of the world, to know oneself. One.

Therefore, no need to go so far to Neptune.

If anyone is fed up by a ‘Saturn’, so be it.

After all, you have still traveled nearly ten times farther than most will ever go in our solar system.

No Planet Trail Nearby? Build Your Own

This is my personal favourite.

Fortunately, you don‘t need a national park, observatory or official planet trail.

You can set up a mini solar system just about anywhere big enough to walk.

Resources to help build and design scale-model solar systems at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory by Nasa other schools’ worksheets and guides for building models at various scales.

At approximately 1:1 billion, the basic dimensions look roughly like this:

ObjectDiameter of model most closely approximating objectDistance from Sun most closely approximating
The Energy Level of the Excited State
Ⅱ. EXCITED STATE ENERGY LEVEL The following diagram represents the various Energy Levels of the excited state.
Energy Level Diagram of the Excited State
Ⅱ. ENERGY LEVEL(S) OF THE EXCITED STATE The diagram shown below depicts the different energy levels of the excited state.

Mars0.7cm228m
Jupiter14 cm778 m
Saturn12cm (image size)1.4 km (size of Envisat)
LocationDistance from the SunDiameter of the surface feature
Neptune~ 5cm4.5km

These, however, are all approximate physical models, not just ratios.

If 4.5 kilometres seems too distant, take everything and divide by ten.

At the moment Neptune is approximately 450 meters away.

That‘s why that‘s a very common walk in the neighbourhood.

The planets are getting smaller but the relative proportions are retained.

For example, the first occasion when I attempted this I was on a footpath holding an orange.

A neighbour enquired what I was up to.

“Saturn,” I said.

He nodded and walked in.

Even now, that is something I continue to ponder.

Common Planet-Walk Mistakes to Avoid

Incorrect distance estimation

The distances between the outer planets are actually pretty widely separated in a to-scale representation.

However, this is precisely the point, but it can also make your walk a bit longer.

Therefore, don‘t underestimate how much water and food you‘ll need.

Depending on misinformation

Trails may be closed.

Similarly, access may be altered.

Signs may be relocated.

Facilities may operate on seasonal schedules.

Therefore, always verify such information from the authorities before making such travels.

Rushing

Zapping rushing is a subtype of skimming, typically lauded for its increased efficiency over continuous thrusts.

Datany et al. (1978) described it with the phrase “the entire air flow is used to increase the momentum of the rest flows.”

R.L. Tucker has noticed that zapping may start with thrusts at a lower frequency alternating with higher frequencies.

Nevertheless, the worst one altogether is probably this.

That’s the point of a planet walk, to have the experience of how far it is.

Instead, play the game as if you are in a relaxed state.

Read the signs.

Observe.

Whatever you, for example, fall flat in the middle of the planets.

Forget the return journey

Some are point to point.

For example, it‘s just beginning the long journey to Neptune.

Therefore, have prepared a sufficient amount of energy to make your way back.

Overlooking the weather

Conditions are a very important factor that can turn an easy route into a difficult route.

Therefore, read the forecast, wear the proper apparel and be ready to turn around if the conditions warrant.

Frequently Asked Questions About Planet Walks

What is a planet walk?

A planet walk is a walk designed as a scale model of the solar system.

In other words, visitors can feel the great distances between the objects of our solar system as the model shows the Sun and planets on scaled distances.

How long is a planet walking?

It varies according to the trail and the scale.

For example, route times for the Guide are approximately between two hours and three/four hours, but routes can also be shorter or considerably longer.

Therefore, always check the actual information for the individual trail.

Are planet trails good for kids?

Yes.

In general, most planet walks have been developed with educational purposes and families in mind.

For example, shorter routes or guided experiences are likely to cater for younger children.

In addition, bring lots of snacks with you, get the child involved in the adventure and be prepared to turn back early.

Do I know any astronomy?

Not by any means.

Most of what you need is generally displayed on the trail markers.

In fact, imagine knowing very little, it can make it even more fun because every planet is a new discovery.

Table 2: Can you do a planet walk alone?

This table illustrates for individual CVs if they can manage a planet walk on their own.

Smaller CVs usually require help from a larger CV.

Yes, more frequently than not.

However, some paths are suitable for self-guided tours with audio or signs.

Others run guided programs at set times.

Therefore, verify the individual trail before doing the trail.

How should I dress?

Dress in comfortable footwear with closed toes and better grip.

For longer or easier trails, hiking shoes are recommended.

Also, pack layers in case the weather changes and remember the sunscreen.

Final Words: The Walk That Altered My Perception of Space

Planet walks off my mind because a nine-year-old caught me giving an awful answer.

I concluded my first when with feet aching, a photographic record far too long and a new perspective of the night-time sky.

Now, when I see a bright pin in the sky above, I don’t just think, “Oh, look, that’s a planet.”

I think of the vast distance involved between it and the Sun.

I’ve walked that tiny distance.

Do-it-by-ourselves.

That‘s why that’s the true magic of a hiking planet.

Convert something that is nearly impossible to understand into something shaped for humans.

In addition, you go outside.

You move, speak, and discover something new.

And then, suddenly, you realize how small earth is and how vast the cosmos is.

Pick a path then.

Alternatively, create your own solar system on a driveway or sidewalk.

Let go of your Sun.

Earth 3.3.11.1Q Place Earth.

Finally, just keep walking.

And next time someone inquires about the distance to Neptune, you can reply, “Seriously long distance.”

Give me time to think this through and I‘ll have a far superior response.

“Go ahead and walk it.”
