Beach Park Oxnard CA: Everything You Need to Know

Visit beach park oxnard ca for family fun, parking, playgrounds, dog rules, beach access, and helpful local tips for your trips.

I can still remember the moment I typed “beach park oxnard ca” into my search engine. Sitting in some parking lot just off the 101, my sunblock evaporated by the sweat of a thousand SPF, with three irritable children in the backseat with nothing to do and no plan to do it, I typed it. We had just come up from LA on a “spontaneous beach trip” which, let’s be honest, is an alluring little phrase that doesn’t really translate when you’re off the cuff with an unruly toddler.

I needed a beach that would provide parking, toilets, and, if I was lucky, something to keep tiny persons happily preoccupied for more than minutes on end. What I found was a park so wonderful that I’ve been visiting it for years now and believe me I should be sending an appreciative email to the googler.

And if you’re the kind of traveler who likes comparing different beach destinations before planning a trip, it’s worth looking at other beach guides too. For example, this ultimate guide to stunning Oahu beaches covers everything from family-friendly shores and beach access to parking and the different experiences you can expect at beaches around Oahu. It’s a useful comparison when you’re trying to figure out what makes one beach destination work better for your particular trip.

Wait a Minute, Is It “Oxnard Beach Park” or “‘olokoy Beach Park”?

Here’s some fun local knowledge that confuses almost every new visitor I bring here. I have to put myself in that category (new visitor) because the City of Oxnard runs this 62 acre park, which they called Oxnard Beach Park until 2023 when they named it ‘olokoy, a representation of the dolphin from the Chumashan language, to honor the original inhabitants of the Oxnard beaches before the city built the parking lot or pirate ship playground.

It’s kind of like how the big cheese in town still calls a street something, but public records and road signs say otherwise, like when the mayor of Oxnard renamed 5th Street after himself in the 70s. People do this commonly, and if you Google it, you’ll find a few places where addresses are incorrectly listed. Business websites and review sites are the same way and right now, there are old residents of Oxnard who without hesitation will call it “Oxnard Beach Park.” Moreover, there’s a chance that you’ll always call it the wrong one in conversation because of the way we always did.

For the sake of clarity, I will refer to the guide by both names because in reality that is what people search for and refer to it as.

Where Exactly Are We?

‘Olokoy Beach Park is located at 1601 South Harbor Boulevard in Oxnard California 93035, smack dab in the middle of Oxnard’s other famous beaches. Think of Oxnard’s five miles of beaches as a sandwich, and this beach park is the filling forming the coastline between Hollywood Beach to the south and Mandalay Beach to the north. This site is actually very convenient because you can walk or bike to a couple of other beaches in case this beach becomes too crowded (in my experience, it never gets crowded).

Plus the park itself is not a small patch of grass. 62 acres, which is around 47 football fields. That’s why when I first visited here, I didn’t think there was that much area and even took 20 minutes trying to find my picnic table like a flightless golden retriever. To find this park while you search “beach park oxnard ca” in your GPS, this is the address you will be using.

Getting There and Parking (The Part Everyone Actually Cares About)

Let’s face it you search ‘beach park oxnard ca’ because you want to find a beach, not because you care about history. You want to know if you can park without touring the whole neighborhood with your kids continually asking “are we there yet” from the backseat. Well The Good News is you can.

This place has a parking lot right here in the park, and whether you look at that site or the one the state has, it’s a bit different. Some descriptions talk about the parking lot being $1 an hour or $5 a day, and other sites talk about free public parking lots at both ends of the beach. Honestly, I’d say bring some cash along just in case, and if the parking lot machine looks a little dated, don’t worry—they probably haven’t updated one of those coin-and-card machines since 2004.

If the main lot is full (which it can be on holiday weekends), another option is through the north entrance adjacent to the Mandalay Beach Road/Sunset Lane lot or to take advantage of the limited parking along residential streets. Another option is to park at Neptune Square (further north on Highway 1), which even has a basketball and volleyball court (a bonus for tiring out the little ones before their naps).

Tips from a guy who has learned the hard way: be there by 10am on a July Saturday. A constant, relaxed crowd gathers at Oxnard, though the lot will fill once the marine layer burns off and everyone notices how beautiful it is outside.

What’s Actually There? (A Tour, Minus the Sunburn)

Alright, now it’s time for me to boast, because this park really does have more activities going on than most of the “beach parks” I have been to along the California coast.

The Pirate Ship Playground

If kids are accompanying you, this is the main reason to go. The play zone is monstrous, with a much larger one aimed at 5-12-year-olds and a smaller one for little kids. My youngest fascinated herself with the “crow’s nest” lookout tower (don’t ask) for a full ninety minutes at one point trust me, this is nothing short of a miracle equivalent to loaves and fishes.

Grass, Palm Trees, and Actual Shade

Not all beaches are sand or more sand, the park here has a huge grass park with palm trees, picnic tables and barbecues and paths, that grass strip is a lot more significant than you might think, it makes a world of difference between eating a sandwich with sand blowing into it like some sort of spice and actually sitting down to eat on something solid before making your way down to the beach itself.

Picnic and BBQ Setup

The park offers picnic tables and Covered Group Picnic Areas that you may call to reserve for your party. The number to reserve a picnic table is (805) 385-7946. If you are planning on a birthday celebration, family reunion or just want dibs on the nice shady place, call.

Restrooms (Yes, They Exist)

I can’t speak highly enough of this, especially if you are traveling with children or older relatives. Rest rooms are available on the outer edge of the park that is nearest to the beach. They are not an attraction in themselves I will admit, but after a day at many beaches with no facilities I have come to be grateful for plumbing like others may be of a good vintage.

Rehab Point Path — An Accessibility Gem

This part really touched my heart when I learned about it; Ed Hunt created a 900 ft accessible paved loop behind the beach called Rehab Point Path because of the unfortunate circumstances he faced. A retired veteran, Ed Hunt lost the ability to reach the beach after a stroke forced him into a wheelchair. Hold on a second; this guy got pissed off and built an accessible path so that wheelchair users could reach the sand and see the sunset, and here we are finding that on Google when searching for parking tips. The park also has beach wheelchairs available for seasonal checkout at the main lifeguard towers or year round through Harbor Patrol.

Beach Access and Water Activities

After you clear the dunes, you’re on a truly beautiful stretch of coastline. This white sandy beach provides unsurpassed views of the Channel Islands National Park and Marine Sanctuary, and is perfect for lying in the sun, kayaking, fishing, body boarding, and surfing. It’s not the wildest surf break in Ventura County (that usually goes to Silver Strand a few minutes to the south), but it’s gentle enough for the novices and the families who just want to play in the water without having to fight the waves.

Bringing Your Dog? Here’s the Deal

This is probably my favorite fact about this park, and I hope more beaches will start doing it: the park permits leashed dogs here during the day, as opposed to most of the other beaches in Oxnard that ban dogs during the 9 to 5 hours. My dog (a 80 lbs lab mix that believes each wave is a personal attack) has had many fun hours here, just keep him on a leash, carry bags and you’ll be fine.

When do you actually go?

Here’s a simile: going to the beach in Southern California in June is like arriving at a party exactly at the time the host sent you an invitation — accurate, but you’re also going to be standing around shivering in the drab, gray, “June Gloom” until everyone arrives. The park remains a wonderful place year-round, but you should visit it ideally in the spring or summer, when the marine layer disperses on a regular basis, and you experiencencing the warm, dry heat the Oxnard area is known for.

That said, I won’t even get into sleeping on Monday mornings in the shoulder seasons (late April, September, early October). I’ve spent hours on that beach completely alone, staring at a line of oblivious cars while the pelicans foraged just a few feet away, on a Tuesday morning in late September. You can’t get better than that.

How It Compares to Nearby Beaches

As ‘olokoy Beach Park is smack dab in the middle of Oxnard’s beach coast it might be helpful to know what is nearby if you fancy beach hopping (which I heartily recommend – it’s the California equivalent of a right of passage).

  • Hollywood Beach, just south, has a whole mile of recreation area with bathrooms on the north end and a lifeguard service during the summer. Nice if you want a slightly more traditional “surf town” feel.
  • Mandalay Beach, just to the north, is a mixture of estuarine beach, where a strip of shoreline leads between lush river banks and bluffs, and sandy dune fields that lead down to spectacular views of Channel Islands National Park. Less developed and more pristine.
  • Silver Strand Beach, just a little ways south is the locals favorite for any surfing and has the most “lived-in”, neighborhood feel of the others.
  • Safe Haven.Kids just learning to swim may find Kiddie Beach Park, located within the Channel Islands Harbor, to be a safer and calmer choice, as the harbor shelters it from waves.

What I would personally choose if you really want me to decide (and you do want me to decide because you’re reading this): ‘olokoy Beach Park has the best of everything for families and beginners because both the playground and the beach, the chairs and the restrooms are all within a few steps of the parking lot. But if I’m solo surfing, I’ll prefer the five-minute drive to Silver Strand.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where can I pay when I go to Beach Park in Oxnard? There is no free charge of the park itself. You’ll only pay if you get into the metered parking lot.

Are there guards? Unless you come here in the summer time there isn’t any lifeguard coverage in this part of Oxnard, so swim more carefully during off-times, especially when kids are in the water.

Is it possible to host a birthday party or event there? Yes — reservation-only covered group picnic areas and open grass areas are available for more formal events or casually just for gathering with friends.

Is it wheelchair accessible? Absolutely. The beach is accessible via the 900-foot Rehab Point Path, a paved accessible footpath to the beach, where beach wheelchairs are available for checkout.

How dog-friendly? Yes, and more than slightly so — plenty of leashed dogs all day long, on borrowed time I suppose.

Final Thoughts From Someone Who Keeps Coming Back

Seeing that frazzled version of me years ago sitting in a parking lot, phone in hand, sunscreen splotches where the sun shouldn’t be, I had no way of knowing I had only just found something that would become our family’s place to go to the beach. It’s hardly the nicest beach in California. There’s no walk for shops and rollercoasters. All there is, honestly, is that it just… works. Parking is reasonable; the playground gets your kids just enough time to go do work; the grass allows you to sit down and relax without sand in the food; the actual beach is pleasant once you get through the dunes.

Whether you’re a day-tripper from LA, cruising the PCH, or a Ventura county resident not yet fortunate enough to have experienced ‘olokoy Beach Park for yourself.Keep the following in mind on your way to the park: bring cash for the parking, apply sunscreen to the kids, and perhaps some patience the first time around when you’re not quite sure where you’re going. Once you’ve found it, you’re sure to return and be the ultimate resource when people inquire about ‘beach park oxnard ca’.

Helpful Resources

For official hours, rules, and updates, these are the sources worth bookmarking:

  • City of Oxnard Parks Division : here is the city’s own page on park hours, dog policy and picnic permit fees.
  • Beaches & Parks : Beaches info, pet hours & beach wheel chairs from the Ventura County Harbor Patrol. It’s the government. We don’t want it to be “perfect” , just good.
