That last one… I always knew that. It is just an observation that I made the first time I was at a resort in Mexico. It was a real eye opener. From the moment I checked in I knew if the staff liked kids or just tolerated them. I think that kids know that too they always seem to.

My First “Aha” Moment: The Kids’ Club That Changed Everything

I recall being dropped off by my wife and daughter at the kids’ club on that tragic first day of that unplanned pleasure cruise, expecting my clingy, crying daughter to cling to my legs. Activities designed for “cool” instinct, not childlike water sports, climbing walls, teen centers filled with real arcade games.
The never dials out Wi-Fi (which is a hill I am willing to die on)

Club Meds (as well as some Four Seasons properties) have taken it to the next level by creating teen-exclusive spaces that seem more like a boutique hotel lobby than a “kids’ zone.” It’s a small detail, but there’s a world of difference to a 14-year-old trying to decide whether to participate or just lock herself in the room. Europe, particularly Portugal’s Algarve coast and some areas in Greece, is only a good option if you’ve got older children who can sit it out for a long flight. On the other hand, the rewards are significant: architecture, history and, as far as I am concerned, food that makes the trip much more than a week by the pool (which, you have to admit, is also a valid option).

If luxury without worry is your style then Hawaii and other US locales are the move. Though nightly prices will be more costly on average, cruise airfare costs will be cheaper, you’ll avoid jetlag, and you won’t waste the first two days getting acclimated.

What I Wish Someone Had Told Me Before Booking

To be honest, there is a huge discrepancy between those marketing luxury resorts and the reality and none of us are being told about it.

“All-inclusive” doesn’t mean everything is included. Read the fine print. Many resorts section off their best restaurants, water sports, or spa treatments so you have to pay a surcharge even as part of an all-inc package. We discovered this when at a resort that charged us $40 a head and yet another fee for its best restaurant in addition to the hefty nightly rates. Contact the hotel directly and inquire what is included before you make your reservation.

The room location is more important than these pictures show. A “garden view” room could just as easily overlook the delivery entrance. When booking a family suite, request a room by the kids club, the elevators and the pool. Toting a stroller back and forth across the property twice a day gets tiring quickly.

Pre-book the kids’ club before you arrive, if you can. Popular ones tend to get booked out quite quickly, especially while on school holidays. My mistake was to turn up at resorts to find that the kids’ club was sold out for the whole duration, because I didn’t preBook.

Honestly it really depends on what you want. If “dump the kids in some place sunny and nice” is the only thing on your list then you don’t need the luxury. A pretty decent mid-range all-inclusive will do the trick. I have had 10 times better experiences at those as well. But if you need peace, quiet and relaxing then it is worth every penny. Full-time reliable child care you trust, a place where you don’t have to be forever balancing between what you want and what your kids want and staff who deal with small problems before they even turn up. The research proves this too: quality family time has a good history of links to higher levels of communication and wellbeing. This makes the case for luxury.

To think about it, just a bit more like expecting to get a block of quite a big comfortable hotel room from Cisco ‘for free’. What you are actually buying is your bandwidth.

Final Thoughts From One Tired Parent to Another

If there’s only one thing I want you to remember, it’s this: The “best” luxury family hotel is not a universal theory. It’s the one that fits your family right now. A resort conceived to contain the rabidity of toddlers will be deadly dull for a teenager. A resort designed to facilitate relaxed teen independence will be agoraphobic for a “threenager.” Know your characters, find your fairy tale, and don’t be afraid to email resorts with hyper-specific questions. The ones worth your cash will be glad to respond.

And then, when you find “the one” that actually works that magic hour by the adults-only pool while your kid makes sea-turtle art and new best friends? That’s what I call priceless. Seriously.
