How to Pick the Best Tours from La Spezia Italy

Find the best tours from La Spezia Italy, from Cinque Terre to Pisa and Florence. Compare prices, times and smart cruise-day tips.

Honestly, I had no plan the first time I got off the train in La Spezia. Well, I knew I wanted to go to the Cinque Terre, because I had read that this was the “gateway.“Sounds romantic until I realize I am standing in the middle of a busy train station, phone only half charged, and had no clue what one of forty seven tours to Rome on my screen would be worthy of my money.

You have found this here because you are likely in the exact same situation I was. Perhaps you are a cruise passenger with a cruise departing at 5 p.m. and an overwhelming fear of arriving late. Maybe you‘ve set up camp in La Spezia because the hotels in the Cinque Terre villages are too expensive. Or perhaps you just don‘t want to drive in Italy (which I don‘t blame you.). If you want to travel in style, with private drivers, boats and long wine lunches, think of this as your Luxury Travel and Luxury Vacations Guide to the Ligurian coast.

No matter what you‘re looking for, I help you find the best tours from La Spezia, Italy, what they are truly like, who they are perfect for, and how to steer clear of the mistakes I made so you can enjoy the trip instead of stressing about the details. If you‘re searching for tours from La Spezia Italy, you found them!

Why is it such a good base for tours?

Most people don‘t go to La Spezia and just use it as an overnight stop. This is an error, as it is a great base, and in many ways is much like a hub airport. It isn‘t somewhere you go to look at the terminal, but simply somewhere you go because everything runs through it.

From La Spezia you can reach:

  • The five villages of the Cinque Terre. To do it by train, boat or with an organized excursion.
  • Directions to Portovenere and the Gulf of Poets are as follows: by bus or boat
  • Pisa in about an hour away by train
  • By road or rail 4 hours each way to Florence Welcome to the world’s most convenient, estaurant City center. Charmer, 2 min walk from train station FREDERIKSBERG, largest in Europe, 12 mins by electric train to Klampenborg/walk , near the largest park in the world and King’s Garden 4 hours away in each direction ( road or rail).
  • Carrara and the Tuscan hills behind.

The town itself is a working port, not a tourist attraction. And strangely I fell for that too. You’ll find real life, real people, real shops, eating focaccia at a plastic table outside the marina. It’s more authentic Liguria than in the oversold villages.

The trade-off? Since everything radiates out of La Spezia, there is a large choice of trips available, and they differ widely from inexpensive, to high-end, and time wise. So let‘s begin to narrow down. Whatever trip out of La Spezia Italy you decide upon, you will be departing from a convenient hub.

Quick Picks: Top Tours from La Spezia to Reserve now from La Spezia

If you‘re in a hurry (and if you‘re on a cruise, you probably are), here‘s the short version:

Something unusual from the crowds. The Carrara marble quarries

Let‘s get into the details.

1. Cinque Terre Tour from La Spezia

It’s the one everyone is looking for; and there’s a good reason why. The Cinque Terre (five villages hanging off cliffs over the Ligurian Sea) is one of those places that appears unreal when viewed online and then somehow manages to be even more breathtaking when experienced in the flesh. It’s hands-down the most popular tour from La Spezia Italy.

Duration: Approximately 5 to 8 hours.

Typical price: Usually somewhere between around €60 150 per person (depending on whether it is a group sharing, boat tour or private driver). Always check current prices prior to booking.

Ideal for: Tourists who don‘t want to handle train timetables while getting the main points of interest.

There are three main ways to do this tour:

By train, with a guide your guide will meet you at the train station, sort out tickets, and accompany you on a train to two or three villages. This is the cheapest way to go guided, and the trains are rapid as the villages are close together.

From the water. Regular ferries and private boats allow you to get close to the villages from the water they should be experienced from, looking up rather than down. Imagine a line of pastel colored houses, packed in tight and seemingly spilling out across the hillside, and you‘re getting there.

By private driver or van. More expensive, and more flexibility. You may be able to stop at a viewpoint or family-run winery.

My own inaugural Cinque Terre day was an optimism-whitewash. I ignored the existence of tickets. By Vernazza I had stood in 2 lines, missed a train, and eaten a depressing gas station sandwich. A guide to Cinque Terre would have saved me at least a couple hours and a more cheerful state. Lesson learned.

Insider tip: Book a tour and go early. Come 11 a.m. in summer, the village turns into a blaze of tourist crowds in a narrow village of lanes that resemble more of the end of a music concert than a rustic Italian village.

2. Pisa and Florence Day Tour from La Spezia

This one’s kind of like trying to eat two enormous desserts in one sitting. Do I think it’s ambitious? You bet I do! Do I think you can manage it? Yep, you can if you’re smart about it.

Duration: Usually 8–10 hours, maximum a whole day.

Typical price – usually in the €80–€160+pp range.

Perfect for: Cruise holidaymakers with limited time who wish to see the major attractions, seasoned art explorers and first-timers to Italy.

For visiting Pisa, it‘s an hour or so from La Spezia, and then Florence adds another hour or two on the top. Most tours show you an hour or so at the Leaning Tower, Piazza dei Miracoli and then continue onto Florence with the Duomo, Piazza della Signoria and the Ponte Vecchio.

But truthfully, that‘s a lot of hours in a car. Plus you‘re going to be in a coach seat for a good portion of your day, and Florence can be explored much better than in a very few hours. If this is your one day in the area and you‘ve never been to Florence before, then I would say go for it, but be aware, this is a nibble — not a full meal.

Cruise tip: Select an excursion or tour sponsored by the cruise line or one that assures your return to port. If you venture out on your own and the traffic is hell, no one is going to wait for you. I saw a couple one time outrun a pier waving to a jogging ship that had already begun to cast away. Don’t be that couple.

3. Pisa-Only Half-Day Tour

If even Florence seems overwhelming, a Pisa-only outing is less nerve-wracking, and fairly easy to do alone. You can get a train from La Spezia very easily, and the tower is a very short walk or bus ride from the station at Pisa Centrale.

A guided half-day makes the most sense if you‘re interested in context (why‘s the tower tilted, soft ground, by the way?) and in seeing what else is in that square. In addition, you can typically throw in a lunch in the city.

Who is it for: Families with children, those who have limited time, and those who prefer to avoid a marathon day.

4. Portovenere and Gulf of Poets Boat Tour

This is my definite favourite, and the one I will suggest when friends say, “We want to relax, but also see something beautiful.”

Portovenere on the tip of a peninsula is crowned by a dramatic church (San Pietro) sitting on rocks above the water and a harbour surrounded by brightly coloured buildings. The Gulf of Poets got its name because Byron and Shelley loved it – which says a lot: even these brooding Romantic poets looked at this view and thought, “Yeah, that’ll do.”

Duration of use: 3–6 hours.

Average fare: Frequently less than a Cinque Terre trip, depending on whether it‘s a groupboat or a private one.

Best for: Couples, the slow traveler and anyone who gets claustrophobic in the Cinque Terre.

On my return to La Spezia, I did that all the way through. We jumped in a boat, devoured fried anchovies from paper cones, and dove into the water off the rocky ledge of Palmaria Island. It was one of those afternoons where no one looked at their phone. And no, no one missed the crowds of Cinque Terre.

5. Tuscan and Lunigiana Food and Wine Tours

Okay, I’m starting to sound like a food blogger here, so pardon me if I do.

There are family-run farms and wineries dotted all over the hills outside La Spezia (and a stones throw across the border in Tuscany and the Lunigiana region) to tingle your taste buds for typical Ligurian fare of properly made pesto, Vermentino, cured meats, oil and focaccia that will be both salty and a little bit greasy in all the right places.

Duration: Typically 4 to 7 hours.

Typical price: Very variable, but generally within the cost of €80-€180 inclusive of tastings and lunch.

Best for: Food lovers, lovers and travelers who like to eat instead of ticking off monuments.

If you are doing just one “different” tour, it’s this one. I would give up a time-consuming, cramped photo stop for an extended lunch under a pergola every single time.

6. Carrara Marble Quarries Tour

Less famous, but equally unforgettable. You could say they‘ve been lightly snowed, but in fact it‘s marble. Sure, the Apuan Alps above the town of Carrara might seem like they‘ve been lightly dusted with snow, but it‘s marble.

Any tour will take you up to the quarries in a tough 4×4 and that’s part of the fun. You jostle along white gravel, observe workers slicing out giant blocks, and pick up some local lardo (oh yes, cured pig fat and yes, yum).

Good for: Kids and adults, those on a budget or those who like a challenge.

Cruise Passengers: What‘s Achievable Within a Single Port Day?

This is the number I get asked the most about, so here‘s the short and sweet version.

La Spezia cruise port is within walking distance of the town and train station, a simple stroll or short taxi ride away. So you can easily get on to a tour or train ride. That is one of the primary reasons cruise guests take tours from La Spezia Italy.

Here‘s how I‘d think about your time:

  • 6+ hours in port: As above but after the second hour you may also have time to visit La Spezia.
  • 6 to 8 hours: Once you get to Rome it is a good time to do a trip to Cinque Terre or Pisa half-day tour.
  • 8+ hours: Very feasible if you’re not considering the return. (Pisa and Florence)

Golden rule: put some slack on. Always. It‘s (not) like getting a plane, because the ship‘s got to leave you (really really got to leave you). Make sure you are back an hour before all-aboard time at least.

DIY or Book a Tour? An Honest Comparison

I love tinkering myself, so I won‘t be suggesting tours are def better. That‘s how it really shapes up.

Go DIY if:

  • You‘re planning to stay a couple of days and have no choice but to wait anyway
  • You are at home with italian trains and a little chaos
  • You want to avoid costs.

The Cinque Terre ferries can be slow and cheap and easy once you get the hang of them. Simply validate your ticket and one can anticipate an audience throughout summer.

Book a tour if:

  • You’re on a time constraint (cruise guests, this message is for you)
  • You just want the history and the story about each stop.
  • You will spend one day visiting Pisa and Florence
  • You don‘t want to have to consider logistics

A tour is a little bit like hiring a guide to lead you on your trip.. Alternatively, you could pack your own supplies, but occasionally you want someone who already understands the terrain.

Practical Tips Before You Book

A few lessons, learned the hard way:

  1. Make reservations in the high season. Tours often sell out by late spring to early fall.
  2. Take a look what’s on offer. Entrance fees, lunch and transfers are all highly inconsistent.
  3. Read recent reviews. Pay attention to any comments about timing, quality of the guides and crowd control.
  4. Wear comfortable shoes. You will do lots of a stairs, cobble stones and steep hills.
  5. Take water and sunscreen. Shade is not as common as you think.
  6. Verify where you are to meet. Not all tours meet at the station, some of them at the port. Don‘t confuse the two.
  7. Confirm details. Commonly used hiking trails, boat timetables and ticketing policies evolve, so confirm the most recent details directly with the relevant authorities.

Best Time to Take Tours from La Spezia

Spring (April to early June) and early autumn (September to October) are the best times: warm, sunny and less busy. July and August are hot and busy. Winter is quieter, but some boat services are less frequent or on occasion cease.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will La Spezia be a good base for visiting the Cinque Terre?

Is it cheaper than in the villages? Yes. It takes 10 to 20 minutes by train to the first village.

How literally distance from in to La wide Open saved to Read virtual Help” off of main here m Km From La Spezia to () always – Wikimedia] Sanifani si Foro FLORENCE It extends twenty miles SQ La Spezia.

About 2-3 hours each way – it depends on your mode of travel -Therefore, a day trip to Florence from Siena takes about 2-3 hours.

How do you do the Cinque Terre in a day?

Yes, you can visit several villages in a day. You won‘t be able to see everything leisurely but a good guide will help you choose what‘s best.

Are day trips from La Spezia worth it?

If you like easy, context and peace of mind, yes. If you’ve plenty of time and want to be very independent, then definitely DIY.

What are cruise passengers supposed to reserve?

Cinque Terre or a sure-shot Pisa and Florence excursion are among the most recommended. Always leave some space.

Helpful Resources for Planning Your Trip

I am going to be honest and say that before I start shopping for anything, I will bookmark a few places that I would go first:

  • Use the information from O‘Mahony, Mezzo and Monti et al for background information about the protected coastline you will be visiting
  • Opera della Primaziale Pisana for official Leaning Tower and Piazza dei Miracoli tickets

Final Thoughts

La Spezia may lack the renown of Florence or the postcard aesthetic of Vernazza, but it is the sort of city that effortlessly allows the rest of your holiday to fit into place. It‘s the one who takes charge of the book your friends want so they can enjoy themselves.

My biggest tip? Focus on one thing, and do it well. You can‘t fit Cinque Terre, Pisa, Florence and a winery into one day. Italy is a country that benefits from taking it slow. Long lunch. Boat rides. Sunset views.

And if at some point, you happen to be on that station platform and your phone‘s at 12% and you‘re questioning yourself, just breathe. You‘ve got this. And now… you have a plan.
